Canadian Artist’s creative response to Mad Cow’s Disease

CANADIAN ARTIST’S SCULPTURE IS RECOGNISED IN BRITAIN.

OTTAWA BASED SCULPTOR HILDE PAZ WOULD LIKE THE MEDIA TO CONSIDER HER SCULPTURE, 'A HEALING GESTURE', AS AN IMPORTANT VISUAL MESSAGE TO THE CURRENT MAD COW CRISIS

THIS SCULPTURE WAS EXECUTED WHEN THE ARTIST LIVED IN BATH, ENGLAND DURING THE MARCH 1996 OUTBREAK OF MAD COW’S DISEASE.

Hilde talks about the creation of her sculpture, “A Healing Gesture”

"A HEALING GESTURE is my passionate response to the bovine spongiform encephalopathy or mad cow disease crisis that exploded in Britain in March 1996. I felt a deep sadness for the tragedy of the slaughtering and burning of thousands of cows through negligence and greed. The issue that everyone seemed to be avoiding was the question of responsibility. Who was responsible? It became increasingly clear to me how we are all responsible and desperately in need of social healing.

A HEALING GESTURE is my contribution and individual effort to bring about change.

A HEALING GESTURE was exhibited at the Schumacher Lectures in September 1996 and featured in Living Earth magazine, # 193, January 1997, Bristol, England

Answer;
They are all recipients of a Special Awareness Award from Media Natura, the prestigious environmental media consultants. This award recognizes those whose efforts have drawn 'public attention to pressing environmental issues.

But what has The Cow done to deserve this honour? In the view of the judges, this unlucky beast, through BSE, has been instrumental in /raising awareness of damaging farming methods, and for paving the way for organic farming, which produces healthier, happier cows.

For countless thousands of course, recognition was given posthumously. It was the horror of the killing and incineration that urged sculptor Hilde Paz to create her passionate and personal response to the BSE crisis.

Hilde Paz's 26cm-high clay sculpture, entitled A Healing Gesture, was on display at the Schumacher Lectures in Bristol this autumn."
