What is Sculpture Therapy?

My work in sculpture therapy is person-centered. I value and respect each person as an individual with particular needs and challenges. I derive my inspiration from the truth that illness is not a misfortune, but a means whereby learning and change are made possible.

The creative and healing power of sculpture therapy is especially important today, as it challenges us to take hold of matter in a new way and provides the opportunity of participating in our own health and healing. My role is to guide you through a series of clay exercises that support your healing process, or to follow your creative expression mindful of your sculptural needs.

Sculpture therapy as outlined by Rudolf Steiner is a new way of seeing the interweaving of body, soul and spirit. Rudolf Steiner clairvoyantly perceived how sculpture was intimately connected to the life of the etheric body, also called the 'formative force body'.

Sculpture therapy works directly with these form giving forces. Firstly, we begin with the element of space. Our awareness grows and expands into experiencing the many directions and qualities. Our hands are continuously forming, feeling beneath the surface of the clay, adding or taking away the mass, shaping and structuring the whole form. This activity in turn works into our physical body, and in such a way that we are forming and strengthening our constitution and soul tendencies.

As we learn to take hold of the substance of the earth with an enlivened sense of touch, the clay takes on a sense of life and transforms itself into the language of living form.
